The Greek Language
The Greek language is one of the oldest Indo-European languages. It has been spoken for more than 3,400 years and holds a prominent place in the history of the Western world. Millions of people know Greek, either in its ancient form or as Modern Greek. At the same time, Greece occupies an extremely important geographical position, a crossroads between East and West.
Greek is no ordinary language: it was the official language of the Byzantine Empire and the language in which many philosophical texts of global significance were written. Furthermore, the Greek alphabet has served as the basis for several later alphabets, such as the Latin alphabet (the basis for most Western languages, including English, French, Italian, and Spanish) and the Armenian alphabet.
